LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — This Friday, Mar. 6, 2026, Los Alamitos High School is hosting their annual American Sign Language Awareness Event in the media center at 6 p.m. to promote American Sign Language awareness on campus. The event is held in hopes of bridging the hearing and deaf communities that are often divided due to societal communication barriers. Hosted by the LAHS ASL Honor Society, there have been months of preparation to ensure that the event is a success.

The event began a few years ago as a Girl Scout Gold award project by alumni E. Burch as they hoped to educate students and community members on the often marginalized deaf community.

There will be snacks and signing games for all of the LAHS students and staff, not just those involved in the ASL classes on campus. After years of successful events, many of the ASL students are looking forward to being involved again this year. 

“I think if the event is like last year, it will be super fun,” said Rory Young, a LAHS junior participating in the event. 

There will be students from other schools and different deaf members of the Los Alamitos community in attendance, promoting communication between the Deaf community and the hearing community. 

“This event on Friday is important because it gives students the opportunity to sign and get involved with the Deaf community in a really inclusive, meaningful, and also fun way,” said ASL Honor Society member, senior Ellie Sutherland. 

It’s always so important for the deaf, hearing and anywhere in between to come together, and learn how to communicate with each other helpfully and easily. Another important part of the program is to end any and all misconceptions about the deaf community and this is what the ASL program is providing for the students of LAHS.
