LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — Vibrant music plays from guitars, a trumpet and other instruments as a passionate tune is sung on stage, captivating students and staff in the audience. To commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, Los Alamitos High School invited the mariachi band known as “Los Tiburones” to play during fourth period and lunch on Thursday, Oct. 3.
The local band played a variety of cultural music for an LAHS audience, interacting with people and the crowd and taking song requests. The five band members wore traditional mariachi outfits, sporting a classy look from their suits to their shoes. Both students and staff watching the show listened and showed support by clapping to the rhythm, letting out enthusiastic gritos and waving their phone flashlights in sync with the music.
The experience was overall enjoyable, giving Griffins a fun time and allowing them to learn about another culture through something as simple as music. During the show, the mariachi band even invited one of the students from the crowd to sing the widely renowned and popular song “I Love You, Baby” by Paul Anka.
Students clapped along to the beat and applauded, immersed in the experience with laughs and cheers. As the lights shone bright on the band, each band member took a solo during a song, showcasing each musician’s talent. After the show finished, “Los Tiburones” asked the audience if anyone had song requests and took photos with students.
During lunch on Friday, students enjoyed paletas, traditional Mexican frozen treats on sticks, that staff members handed out in the quad. These celebrations allowed students to experience the festive music and delicious food of Mexican culture, while allowing for a fun and leisurely end to the week. Griffins, remember to pay homage to the rich and beautiful Hispanic culture and heritage this month!
