LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — Underground United Kingdom rappers have been taking social media by storm. With hits like “Fever” by Fakemink and “4 Raws” by Esdeekid, listeners around the world are tuning in. This genre of rap has shaped the culture and sound of British hip-hop. The desire to express their style is demonstrated through their lyrics and sound.
Originating in London, this genre gained popularity in 2025 mainly through social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Separating their music from underground American rappers has been a factor in the birth of underground U.K. rap and has pulled more fans to enjoy their music.
“Everybody stopped trying so hard to be American. We basically said lets just do our own thing. So now it’s more authentic and British,” said rapper Feng in an interview with welcomejpeg.
U.K. underground rap is not only a genre but a resistance against American mainstream music. Making waves internationally and blending experimental notes that are popularized by the internet. No artist has the same sound or style, making them have a unique internet presence. What makes these artists distinct is their authenticity and their anti-popular attitude. U.K. underground rap isn’t about fitting into a certain sound and style but about creating your own and expressing yourself truthfully.
“I feel like Fakemink’s music is really unique, and before him, I have never heard anything like it, so it really represents his image of just being yourself,” said Los Alamitos High School senior Sasha Farajian.
Lancey Foux is an artist who debuted in 2015 with his album “Pink”. He is known for his most popular song, “LANCEY OR LANCEY” from the album “LIFE IN HELL,” which blew up on TikTok in 2022. He began his career in his bedroom freestyling over YouTube beats and soon ended up releasing his debut album. Lancey pushed the boundaries of hip hop by combining and mixing sounds of experimental genres, trap music and drill music. His high energy and dynamic production on songs and self-reliant craftsmanship make him notable in the genre.
Fakemink is a British artist who skyrocketed in popularity in the past year. His unique approach to music and strong opinions about his peers have quickly made him a pillar of U.K. underground rap. His music primarily gained fame through TikTok, where people enjoyed his niche sound. Supporters appreciate how Fakemink has a down-to-earth personality and connects with his fanbase.
“I felt London music had to change. So that album opened people’s eyes when it comes to new London music,” said Fakemink in an interview with Solomon Adams.
With the rise of London’s underground rap scene, the flag of the Union Jack has also become popularized. Associated with freedom and rebellion, London underground rappers often associate themselves with the flag, showing their pride in being from the U.K. The flag was a rite of passage for rising British stars to use. The symbol for the Union Jack wasn’t always romanticized, though. The flag started being used as a resistance against the far-right movement in the U.K., who were using the flag as a symbol of anti-immigration. The U.K. underground has given the Union Jack flag a cultural redevelopment.
As U.K. underground rap progresses, it has been making an impact on music, style and fashion. The genre has created an influence internationally from the U.K., expanding the rap industry globally and leaving its mark.
