LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — Los Alamitos High School hosted its first fall assembly in the brand-new gym on Nov. 21. Students crowded the stands and filled the room with excitement as they all came together to celebrate fall.
Every grade was directed to a different door, which made the process of entering a lot less chaotic. The assembly then kicked off with the LAHS advanced mixed show choir SoundFx, captivating the audience with their incredible performance of the national anthem. With moving vocals and fall outfits, they left the audience speechless with their performance.
The winter sports teams all had classy walkouts and got the crowd excited. One by one, the teams walked out, hyping the crowd up and encouraging students to come to their upcoming games.
To encourage people to come to their games, there was a lip sync battle between sports teams. The battle was between the girls’ soccer team and the joint girls’ water polo and girls’ basketball teams. The winner of the competition was girls’ water polo and basketball, who danced to the song “Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’.”
Next, participants signed up before the assembly to participate in a no-hands pie-eating contest, with eight contestants competing for the win. Contestants devoured their pie, and the winner was LAHS senior Jack Applebee.
“It was really funny seeing my friends try and eat the pie as fast as they could,” said Esme Justice, an LAHS sophomore.
After the game, LAHS senior Arron Myers came out to perform his unbelievable and creative routine. He left the crowd speechless with his impressive tricks, stellar talents and hip-hop technique.
The second game was a pumpkin racing competition. Five teams had to race the pumpkin down to the finish line without touching it with their hands, then quickly run back to pass the pumpkin to their teammate. Contestants used their heads to push the pumpkin down to the finish line, and the competition got crazy.
The final activity was the introduction of LAHS’ Next Top Griffin. The eight contestants were first shown in a video, then each had a chance to speak and share a little about themselves and what to expect from their performance.
ASB concluded the assembly with the LAHS tradition, the “roller coaster.” For the first time, the seniors were outshone by the juniors, leaving the audience shocked. The fall assembly brought LAHS together and filled the gym with laughter.
“It gave our school a sense of community. It caught the students up on the sports teams, and it allowed us to celebrate Thanksgiving break,” said Simone Donohue, a sophomore at LAHS.
