LOS ALAMITOS, CA – Suitcases in hand, members of the Soundtrax and SoundFX divisions of Los Alamitos High School’s choir left campus on March 22 to leave for New York. They went to participate in the Heart of America NYC competition for the week of March 22-27.

The performance itself was on Saturday, March 25. Dozens of schools all across the country came to New York to compete. The competition was livestreamed on YouTube for families and friends at home.

Los Al’s SoundTrax gave a Regency Era London-style performance, dressed in colorful regal attire. Their show kicked off with a beautiful cover of “Rumor Has It” by Adele. In their elegant choreography, the performers used fans as a form of dance that fit the aesthetic that they were going for. Then, the choir switched to active, bold movements to accompany the fast pace the show was taking, and the choir seamlessly mixed songs like “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” by Marilyn Monroe, “Material Girl” by Madonna, and “Single Ladies” by Beyonce into a unique, graceful tune. Modern songs mixed with old aesthetics and a story inspired by Netflix show “Bridgerton” to create a truly remarkable experience.

“Los Al will maximize every possible musical moment, and it’s beautiful to listen to and so fun to watch,” said livestream host Alex Hall. “It’s so professionally arranged.”

A few shows later came SoundFX’s chance to represent Los Al’s excellent choir. The show, which had a circus theme, was whimsical and eccentric. It started with ladies dressed in fluffy lilac layered dresses that contrasted with the bold red suits the men wore. The show focused on a mime and a clown, both whose actors played with dramatic, cartoonish movements that were fascinating to watch.

Both SoundFX and SoundTrax made it to the finals alongside four other high schools. Stakes were high as each group performed to the best of their abilities. SoundTrax won as first runner-up in the Treble category. They also won awards in Best Costumes and Best Visuals. The beauty of the detailed royal-style dresses was definitely exceptional.

“It felt good that all our hard work was paid off,” said SoundTrax freshman Jenna Currey.

At first place for mixed choirs, SoundFX won their 16th National Championship title. SoundFX were also awarded Best Costume and Best Visual, as well as Best Show Design. Los Al’s choir has an eye for stunning costumes, and the animated energy of the students donning the costumes makes each and every show a wonderful sight. Congratulations to SoundTrax and SoundFX!
