LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. As the name suggests, spring break is a scheduled break that gives both students and staff a time to recharge before the end-of-school season. A break from academic responsibilities can be spent in various ways; while most will spend their time traveling, destinations lie right here in Southern California. In reality, these are the same destinations that people from across the globe come to explore!

From relaxation to adventure, here’s a week of local activities and destinations to make the most of your spring break!

1. Have fun at your favorite amusement park

Being able to call California home has many benefits, whether it’s the weather, cultural diversity, or scenery. California is also home to a wide range of amusement parks. These parks are a perfect place to visit with family and friends during spring break.

  • LEGOLAND, San Diego
  • Disneyland, Anaheim
  • SeaWorld, San Diego
  • Knott’s Berry Farm, Buena Park
  • Pacific Park, Santa Monica

2. Visit Palm Springs, California

This desert oasis offers both relaxation and adventure. Palm Springs is a highly loved family-friendly trip, with various destinations such as the Palm Springs Art Museum, Cabazon Dinosaurs, or The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. Noted for its well-known, stylish, mid-century modern architecture, this local destination is perfect for those seeking luxury, excitement, and mental repose. Visit the core shopping district along Palm Canyon Drive, which features vintage boutiques, interior design shops and restaurants.

“I’m planning on going to Palm Springs! Might get a tan, who knows? Or even a sunburn,” said Abby Zidonis, senior at Los Alamitos High School.

3. Go sightseeing at national parks

Southern California’s national parks range widely with plenty of natural appeals, whether it’s Death Valley, Kings Canyon, or the Channel Islands. Another regional favorite is Joshua Tree National Park, which is often described as an out-of-this-world location or a healing experience for one’s soul, according to National Geographic.

Springtime is the best time to visit these beautiful sites, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds making it an ideal time to explore. Travel with your family or take a trip with friends to enjoy comfortable hiking conditions, scenic drives, camping and photography.

4. Throw a picnic

Grab your friends and family for a relaxing thrill! Spring break is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the warm weather. A picnic is a simple yet fun way to celebrate the season. Local spots that are perfect for picnics include Seal Beach, local parks, or even your backyard! Here are some spring break picnic essentials:

  • Fresh fruits and veggies
  • Sandwiches or food of choice
  • Drinks
  • Outdoor games: Frisbee, volleyball, or badminton
  • Utensils, plates, and napkins
  • Snacks
  • Blankets

5. Unplug and unwind

Spring Break is a perfect opportunity to disconnect from technology and recharge with loved ones. Make the most of your break by challenging yourself and encouraging others to distance themselves from devices. Go out and give yourself new experiences and take back time wasted scrolling through social media.

“I’m planning to get a tour of University of San Diego, maybe go to the beach and hit a wave. Oh yeah!” Leonard Rosa, a sophomore at LAHS, said

6. Spend your spring break at sea

Ditch the traditional spring break routine and consider a cruise getaway. Royal Caribbean provides guests with multiple cruise options that depart from Los Angeles, California with destinations such as Ensenada, Cabo, Catalina, and more! Experience cultural and delicious cuisines, amusing historic towns and beautiful beaches all while enjoying time with family! Consider this ideal vacation that can last for three days or more.

7. Lights, camera, spring break!

Instead of you and your family going out to a traditional movie theater, try throwing one in the comfort of your own home. It’ll be a perfect time to gather friends and family for a cozy night. Here’s what’s needed for an ideal movie night:

  • Pick a favorite film! Decide as a group or go for a theme, like classics, comedy, or action.
  • Dim the lights and set up comfy seating; make sure to add blankets and pillows!
  • Popcorn is always favored as a snack, but make sure to have a variety of treats and refreshments. You could even correlate the snacks and movie to a theme!
  • To make the night more interactive, have some discussions, debates, or even trivia games about the movie!

Spring break is the perfect chance to unwind and explore exciting new activities in SoCal. Hopefully, you’ll consider these ideas to make your break memorable and enjoyable!
