LOS ALAMITOS, CA– Starting in Utah of 2017, two cousins, Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley, founded America’s phenomenon, Crumbl Cookies. Their brand first saw an extreme takeoff in 2020 when they started posting pictures and videos of their cookies on social media. They quickly gained a significant amount of followers for their “unboxing” videos that they post about their weekly flavors.

At this point in time, they have around 6 million followers on TikTok and almost 3 million on Instagram. People all over social media create videos of themselves tasting the new flavors each week. Myrella Barbosa, a regional manager at Crumbl Cookies, said that she feels proud whenever people want to come in and make TikToks of their cookies and store.

Considering how Crumbl Cookies gained popularity over social media, it is getting a wide range of customers. Children through to the elderly all shop at Crumbl for a bite of their signature cookies. Over the 5 years that Crumbl Cookies have been around, they have stores in 47 of the 50 United States.

“Crumbl is trying to go worldwide,” Barbosa said.  Barbosa loves the people that she works with and how she gets to make customers shocked and happy when the new cookies come out each week. Although flavors rotate every week,  one cookie, Chocolate Chip, has stayed with them throughout the many years of expansion and gain in popularity. Nevertheless, for Crumbl’s weekly cookies, the CEOs pick the flavors that will come out that next week. Although, the staff gives their input on the flavor of the week for the mystery cookies.

Regarding a poll that was sent out to the students of Los Alamitos, 66 percent of students said that they like Crumbl Cookies, meanwhile 33 percent of students said that they do not. The students here have a wide range of their favorite flavors, including Chocolate Chip,  Pink Sugar, and Peanut Butter Munch. However, even the students who said they like Crumbl, have all agreed that their cookies are in the high price range, and for a cookie of that size, they are very sweet and include a lot of sugar.

“Out of all of the cookies I have tried, Dark Dream is my favorite because of its chewiness, texture, and flavor,” Valentina Botero, sophomore, said. However, several students have expressed their displeasure towards the brand and the company itself.

“Every time I try their cookies, I get a headache because of how sweet they are,” Claire Guetig said.

Although numerous flavors sell out before the end of the week, certain locations will have an excess of product. Due to this, Crumbl Cookies will continue selling the flavors in the hope to sell them Monday and Tuesday, but if they still have an excess of cookies, they like to donate them to the local churches, firefighters, hospitals, etc, so no food goes to waste.

Even with the opposing opinions on Crumbl Cookies, they have taken over Los Alamitos’ sweet tooth. Have they taken over yours?
