Los Alamitos, Calif. — Every year, different brands, styles and stores become popular. Last year, Vans, Converse, Nike and Adidas dominated the footwear of teenagers all over America. As students settle into the new school year, they bring with them the latest fashion trends.

“I’ve noticed people around campus wearing flip flops, Sambas and Air Forces,” Chloe Baral, a junior at Los Alamitos High School, said.

At school, students strive for a comfortable and simple yet fashionable look in their wardrobes. Wearing things like flipflops, sweatpants and sweatshirts provides this. Jessica Joyce, a junior at LAHS, admits that she enjoys how easy it is to slip flip-flops on in the morning.

Kids have shifted away from Crocs and instead are wearing Birkenstocks for a less rubbery and more minimalistic look. With their Birkenstocks, kids often wear socks; slides and socks have become a widely worn combination around campus.

In the past, kids were wearing various articles of clothing from brands like Old Navy, Volcom, Lululemon and Billabong. Currently, students are wearing different outfits that they consider to be in style. Two freshmen at LAHS give their opinion on what they believe is “trendy.”

“(I’ve seen people wearing) Nikes, Adidas, clothes from Zara and clothes from Urban Outfitters,” Freshmen Aliana Lee and Liberty Becerra said.

Baggy jeans remain a common choice among students, while low-rise jeans are making a comeback, along with many trends from the 2000s. Jean skirts and shorts are also very popular and are seen frequently. To go with these jeans, cropped shirts, tube tops, tank tops or baggy shirts are often worn.

Despite the warm temperatures, kids are wearing sweatshirts all day long. In past years, these sweatshirts have been from Stüssy, Dandy Worldwide, Harbor or White Fox. This year, things have changed.

“I’ve seen Fear of God Essentials sweatshirts,” Ashlyn, a senior at LAHS, said.

Along with Fear of God Essential hoodies, Abercrombie’s Camo Essential Icon sweatshirts are worn.

Lululemon remains extremely popular, with its most popular product being its black leggings. Students are not wearing flared leggings as often as they have in previous years.

Although comfortable plaid pajama pants have declined in popularity, sweatpants still prosper.  Kids are finding new and improved ways to stay comfortable at school while also feeling stylish.

As students progress, their fashion sense and priorities change. One day, they might feel like dressing up, but the next, they may feel like simply rolling out of bed and going to school; every year, the trends change and morph into something new.

At LAHS, there are many different styles, but there are also many common articles of clothing throughout the community. Style is a great way for students, teachers, and parents to connect. Having these trends allows everyone to feel comfortable on campus and outside of school.
