LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – Los Alamitos High School has a history of competing against teams from all over California and even the United States. This week, the LAHS football team is traveling overseas to play against Kapolei High School in Oahu, Hawaii.
Every season, LAHS competes against the Hawaii team, and the location of the game alternates each year with both schools taking turns playing on each other’s home turf. This year, it’s the Griffins’ turn to fly across the Pacific to The Aloha State.

The LAHS football team landed in Oahu on Wednesday, Aug. 20, and will spend five days training and playing. Then on Friday, the team will experience the various sights and destinations of the island. Players will spend a day at Pearl Harbor, visit a local swap meet and even attend a luau, before returning home on Sunday.
“(I love) the opportunity to bond with my teammates and experience the culture, because this doesn’t come often where you get to do this,” said varsity quarterback Colin Creason.
Both the JV and varsity football teams will play against KHS this Friday, Aug. 22, with the JV game kicking off at 5:00 p.m. HST (8:00 p.m. PST) and the varsity game starting at 7:00 p.m. HST (10:00 p.m. PST).
Despite the long flight and the humid Hawaiian training conditions, varsity running back Lenny Ibarra is confident in his team’s ability to push through and play well in the game.

“Preparing for the game was tough, as we had to prepare for the weather, and we (knew) it (would) be different from California, but we are going to fight and get it done!” Ibarra said.
Although this week’s game is taking place across the ocean, LAHS family and fans can still watch from home. Make sure to tune in this Friday at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. to see the Griffins play!
