LOS ALAMITOS, Calif.— On Monday, March 27, staff and students were shocked to find a mysterious art establishment pop up on campus. Many were surprised by this art piece’s artistic innovation and detail that randomly showed up at Los Alamitos High School. The mastermind of the piece was freshman Anthony Townsend-Ward. The piece was found on the side of the STEM building next to the media center.

“I thought I was in trouble for vandalizing a wall, but they congratulated me. I was confused at first, but I just went with it,” Townsend-Ward said.

The young artist has shown complete humility in his work, denying that he put in the effort and only put an old banana taped to a wall. However, many disagree, seeing the hidden meaning in art that they feel the artist left behind for people to find.

“I think it symbolizes the waste when we throw away fruit; we don’t think about those who need them the most,” an anonymous student said.

The school’s reaction to seeing the art was very positive. The LAHS art teacher, Mrs. Gonzales, was impressed with the work and was surprised to find out that Anthony had never taken an art class before.

“I think he could be a well-accomplished artist in the future,” Mrs. Gonzales said.

Townsend-Ward’s artwork was moved from its original location and sold later at the Sotheby’s Art Gallery in New York. LAHS principal Mrs. Kraus later congratulated Townsend-Ward and revealed to him that his piece sold for $6.2 million.

“Wait, how much money?!” Townsend-Ward said.

LAHS faculty have decided that, during the process of moving the art piece to New York, it will be displayed as it originally was. This has resulted in a section of the wall that the art was established on being permanently removed. Many students have pondered about the result of the removal: Will the wall be replaced, or will there be a new way to enter the STEM building?
