LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — Carter Hull is a sophomore who balances school work, a clothing brand and a YouTube channel. With over 400,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, “Carter duz stuff,” Hull has been successful with varying view counts, from 5,000 to millions of views on videos. Hull also has an independent clothing brand called Sick Heads, which has sold several hoodies. He also used to collaborate on a brand with his friend, but they eventually decided to work independently.

Hull has been focusing more on his YouTube channel and live streaming. He uploads 4-10 times daily, with new YouTube shorts and longer-form videos almost every month.

Hull’s YouTube channel was created on Aug. 25, 2022, with his goal being to eventually reach one million subscribers. His first YouTube short was uploaded on Aug. 27, 2022 while his first video was uploaded on Mar. 5, 2023.

His content started with surfing videos and activities at the beach, such as skimboarding and wake surfing. Carter now makes challenge videos, like making a cardboard skateboard and a duct tape bridge.

Hull explained how uploading daily helps with viewer engagement and gets more views.

“It always has its ups and downs. I would say the last couple of months have been good,” said Hull.

For his clothing brand, Sick Heads, he gets blank sweatshirts from certain companies and prints out his designs, later pressing them onto the blank clothes.

Although it’s hard to maintain a YouTube channel and clothing brand while also keeping up with schoolwork, Hull tries to get all of his work done and takes an academic lab. An academic lab is a class that students can take, allowing them to complete homework or classwork in class, similar to a skills lab. It also teaches students how to be organized, communicate clearly with teachers, and be efficient while studying.

“As long as you work hard, you could always achieve whatever you’re working towards,” said Hull.
