Tips to help better review material

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — Reviewing material from months of content over six classes is a daunting task. Rather than continuously harping over each line in a textbook, here are three alternatives and strategies for time management and focused work time.

  1. Use flashcards for key concepts and vocabulary to help with comprehending a whole section.
  2. Reread possible key units and sections of the subject textbook. Mark certain pages to review if they are harder to remember.
  3. Look over notes in advance — in the future, remember to write notes that pertain to your style that are easier to understand than a teacher’s lecture slides.
How time can be managed
Managing study hours and times throughout the day for different subjects can often be difficult for different types of learners. (Kaiya Velasquez)

Since managing study time after school can be very difficult, students should prioritize to determine which subjects need the most attention.

  • Academic classes like English, math and science will typically need the most focus, but this may depend on whether you are taking honors or AP classes.
  • Take practice tests BEFORE going through notes to see which topics specifically you will need to spend the most time studying.
  • Each subject should be split up into digestible amounts of information to consume in order to  actually retain what you studied. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many small details.
  • Set timers so you don’t spend too much time on one subject and feel burned out after hours.
Staying focused while doing tedious work
Staying focused while doing tedious work

It’s normal to become impatient, grow tired or procrastinate. If you find yourself avoiding work, here are some tips to help.

  • Study in short segments with 10-15-minute breaks in between. Set a timers!
  • If you start feeling tired, relax for a bit and come back later, rather than becoming so exhausted or frustrated to the point that progress feels impossible.
  • Try studying earlier in the day to avoid feeling tired while studying.
  • Study at a coffee shop or with friend to stay focused.
