LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — Finding someone as overachieving and driven as Joseph Claypool is challenging. As the vice president of Kindness Club, ASB’s student board representative and the founder of Los Alamitos High School’s Pickleball Club, it is evident that he is ambitious.
“He is very dedicated to school and his extracurriculars. He is always either studying in his room or volunteering somewhere,” said his sister Claire Claypool.
On Saturdays, Claypool allocates most of his free time to college applications while on Sundays, he works at the Los Angeles International Airport. On weekdays, he largely concentrates on maintaining his high GPA. On top of this, Claypool works on standardized test preparation and volunteers at ASB events.
As ASB’s student board representative, Claypool frequently assists with presentations, selections, posters and projects.
“Once a month at the Los Alamitos (Unified) School District board meetings, (he) offers an update on what’s been going on at the high school. He presents on academics, athletics, arts and activities and typically highlights a staff or student of the month,” said ASB advisor Mrs. Schanaker.
Claypool also offered tips to enhance students’ academic success. With numerous AP and honors classes, many juniors and seniors lack adequate time to pursue their extracurricular interests.
“Know how much time you’re spending on your phone,” Claypool said. He explained that limiting screen time can help students balance their complicated schedules by improving sleep quality and procrastination.
Additionally, he explained the benefits of getting involved on campus, especially for underclassmen.
“With underclassmen, I think it’s extremely important to consider living in the present but also thinking about your future because if there’s anything I could take from high school, (it’s) doing more activities (and) making more connections with people,” Claypool said.
Part of the reason why he joined ASB was to make these connections and meet new people.
Finally, Claypool recommended that underclassmen balance their schedules by researching classes and asking upperclassmen, peers and teachers for advice.
“Communication is key. With parents and friends, it is important to let them know of your schedule so that conflicts do not arise,” he said.
After graduation, Claypool plans to attend college as an aerospace engineering major.
