Fast facts: American cities and “No Kings” protests

Chicago

On Oct. 4 Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered 300 of the Illinois National Guard and 200 members of the Texas guards to militarize in Chicago. This followed several weeks of Trump threatening to send guards to Chicago claiming the help of the federal government was needed to tackle crime simultaneously, the mayor of Chicago argued that crime rates have been declining.

The state of Illinois then filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, for his Operation Midway Blitz stating that the deployment of troops to Illinois to detain illegal immigrants was illegal. Then on Oct. 16, an appeal from federal courts barred Trump from being allowed to deploy troops.

Portland

On Sept. 28 the Trump administration sent 200 members of the Oregon National Guard to Portland. The decision followed concerns over the safety of ICE facilities by the department of homeland security.

After a lawsuit by Portland against the Trump Administration a temporary restraining order was issued to block the deployment of troops.

On Oct. 5 the administration attempted to send California National Guards to Portland which resulted in a joint effort of Oregon and California challenging the decision and U.S. district judge Karin J. Immergut issued a wide order to stop all national guard deployment to Oregon.

On Wednesday the president was speaking at a news conference where he said that unnamed officials had requested troops for the city.

“California will resist any effort by Donald Trump to militarize another American city for his own vanity and deranged fantasies,” Diana Crofts-Pelayo, spokesperson for Newsom said. “California doesn’t want or need the National Guard to police its streets.”

Trump has also said that he will use the Insurrection Act to allow him the permissions to deploy guards to the city.

"No Kings" protests

On Saturday millions around the county came together to protest Trump's use of the National Guard and his use of ICE to end illegal immigration. It has been reported to be one of the largest organized protests in American history with demonstrations taking place around the country. Common messages on signs included "no kings since 1776" and "no kings" with an x over a crown.

Trump's artificial intelligence video

On Sunday Trump posted an artificial intelligence generated video of himself operating a plane where he flew over a crowd of protestors participating in the ¨No Kings¨ protests. Vice President J.D. Vance also posted an A.I. generated video of Trump placing a crown on his head.
