Girl’s Varsity Tennis is back!
October 6, 2022
Los Alamitos, CA– The Los Alamitos High School Girls’ Varsity Tennis team is already in the middle of its exciting season.
This year’s tennis team has a smaller varsity team and a larger junior varsity team than last year. Both teams are able to regularly practice together this year which builds team spirit. Previously, the varsity team had almost 24 girls.
Macy Buchta, a member of the varsity team, says, “I prefer having a smaller team because it really shows who’s dedicated, wants to be there, and passionate about tennis.”
Members of the team have talked about the special sense of camaraderie they feel this year. The girls have done several bonding trips this year, including a trip to the beach with karaoke. One of this year’s team captains, Bailey Hartman, says that they have a tradition of playing music on the bus to every game to let go of some of the pregame nerves.
“Playing is obviously fun, but for me, … even when I have had a hard day at school, going to practice has lifted my spirits because the energy there is so positive and I get to see my teammates,” stated Hartman.
On Tuesday, Oct. 4, the team competed against their rivals, Newport. They went home victorious with a 16-2 win. Their next home game is on Oct. 11, where they will be playing against Edison High School. The team would like to encourage students to wish them luck if students see them wearing their shirts on game day.
The team’s coach, Ms. Kibtya, is beloved by the players. Many students raved about how she puts the person before the player.
Buchta praised her, saying, “Coach [Kibtya] really pushed me to be the great tennis player I am today.”
The team is hoping that more students will come out and attend their games. While this year they have received more recognition as a sport, Los Al Tennis would love to see more. Students on campus are invited to show their support and recognition in whatever way they can.
“Don’t count us out as a sport because we do have one of the best teams,” affirmed Hartman.
