Charlotte’s Web behind the scenes: auditions

Aleina Tuufuli, Staff Writer

With every new school year, Los Alamitos drama welcomes us back with a fall production, and this year they will be bringing to life E.B. White’s classic novel Charlotte’s Web. Early October, we are expected to see Charlotte’s Web come to Los Al’s performing arts center, but until then let’s focus on what goes on behind the scenes to bring this production to life.

Auditions are a big part of any show. The last few weeks, drama has had auditions, call backs, and casted roles. With auditions, there are bound to be nerves regardless of how long they have been in the drama program.

When asked about how she felt going into auditions, senior Grace DeJongh expressed that she was “nervited.” Grace has been in drama for four years and has been a part of shows such as Puffs, Back to the 80’s, and Museum yet still felt nervous before going in for her audition. Grace also commented on the auditions being cold reads saying, “Yeah, I like that auditions are cold reads. It shows more of who you are as an actor . . . and I get to improv it.”

Grace’s peers shared the same feelings in regards to how they felt going into their auditions and their preferences for cold reads. “I enjoy cold reads. I think as an actor it gives me a challenge to express myself creatively and make choices that could benefit me,” Isabella Ruiz, a junior at Los Alamitos High said.

Similarly, senior Landon Small felt the same. “I feel a little bit nervous, but cold reads are easier so I’m not as nervous as normal,” Landon stated when asked about how he felt going into his auditions. He shared methods he uses when doing cold reads saying “for cold reads, normally you want to make character choices that are different.” Landon elaborates on how reading for different roles requires unique characteristics for each character.

The Los Alamitos Drama show, Charlotte’s Web will premiere October 13th-15th. For more information, click here.
