LOS ALAMITOS, Calif — Orange leaves and crisp, cool air tell us it is time for everyone to bring out their spookiest, spunkiest costumes. Pumpkin spice lattes and sweater weather are right around the corner, along with the festive fun of creating your own horrifying and spine-chilling costumes for Halloween.
“I like Halloween because it gives you an excuse to watch scary movies all night,” said Los Alamitos High School junior Ashley Kim.
The big question is, where are the students of LAHS getting their ghostly inspiration from? Many teens at LAHS go to Pinterest to get inspired.
“Most of my inspiration for costume ideas comes from Pinterest or TikTok,” said LAHS junior Sienna Dipoma.
Inspiration for costumes can be hard to come by when trying to plot the latest and most unique ideas. Besides television, Pinterest has been an extremely popular resource among teens in the 21st century. Pinterest is a platform of unlimited creativity made to organize your passions and imagination.
Halloween is known for being a tradition of horror and spooky tales. However, more charming and cutesy costumes have become increasingly trendy over the past years. From vampires and witches to Dorothy and ladybugs, Halloween is a holiday of imagination and creativity where you can become anything. A question to ask, however, is whether these dainty costumes are washing away the spine-chilling traditions of Halloween?
“I think you can have more fun and be playful with the cute costumes instead of scary (costumes),” said LAHS sophomore Kaylyn Kekacs.
It’s always exciting to dress up as your favorite childhood characters from movies, shows and games, also offering a more nostalgic look for Halloween. To make it even more fun, duo and trio costumes can add a creative touch to Halloween. LAHS students are bringing their most festive and imaginative ideas this year and here are some of them.
“My friends and I are going to do the little trio from the Nightmare Before Christmas,” said LAHS junior Alexia Kontes.
On the more cutesy and peaceful side of Halloween, Kekacs has decided to be the elegant Queen Amidala from Star Wars.
The perfect cutesy touch to Halloween can be added simply with cat or bunny ears. Animal costumes have been admired by the teens of LAHS, especially animal characters from kids’ books and movies such as “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.”
“This year for Halloween me my boyfriend and I are going to be Mr. and Mrs. Fox from ‘The Fantastic Mr. Fox,'” said LAHS junior Amelia Acosta.
If you’re into a more cute yet iconic costume from chick flicks, character costumes from these are also an alternative. Given the chance to make a last haunting mark on high school, seniors give Halloween their all this year.
“I’m gonna be Karen from Mean Girls,” said LAHS senior, Sophia Gatica.
Deciding on a Halloween costume is not always as simple as it seems, but the best thing to consider is creativity, authenticity and passion. Scary, cutesy, sci-fi, wear what you want, and wear it with spooky style.
