LOS ALAMITOS, Calif.– ASB, or Associated Student Body, is an extremely popular organization at Los Alamitos High School, known primarily for its outstanding student sections and annual dances. With 11 committees in the class, the work these students are putting in behind the scenes is astounding.
With the fall football season in full swing, ASB students are working hard to ensure everything is perfect and that students have a fantastic school year.
Student and Staff Recognition
In Student Recognition, both the student and staff committees create new posters every week for the school. Student Recognition honors Athlete of the Week, Senior of the Week and Senior of the Month.
Staff Recognition can get creative with whom they want to recognize, by picking a teacher or staff member of the month!
“We’ve been very busy the first month of school with all of our football games in season, the assembly and Homecoming,” Mrs. Schanaker, ASB Advisor, said. “There will be more recognition tasks that will come up as the school year goes on.”
Clubs
As the school year is still fresh, the Club Committee is focused on creating new club constitutions, arranging club meetings and running Club Rush. Club Rush is a promotional event where ASB members inform students about clubs to join or to make.
Clubs is a very behind-the-scenes committee, as they have to get the clubs approved, reach out to the presidents and plan each meeting.
Video Content
“We could not do it without them,” ASB President, Ella Pardasani said, referring to the Video Content team.
The Video Content team is a crucial committee within ASB.
Video Content participants film at sports events to make every sport stand out, take pictures of anything school-related and post them on social media.
Technology
A critical committee for all of the assemblies hosted throughout the year is Technology. This committee is responsible for the entire editing process of the assembly, including creating music, making cuts and gathering any necessary technology for the assembly.
Spirit
With football games every Friday and a hype-filled student section, the Spirit committee is behind it all. The Spirit committee creates themes for the sports games held on campus, specifically for the football and basketball seasons.
Spirit ensures that the student section remains high-energy and plans chants for each quarter.
“I would describe ASB as a family, a very high-spirited family,” said Pardasani.
Athletics
The Athletics committee highlights sports here at LAHS by contacting sports coaches and selecting a senior athlete of the week.
Athletics is responsible for organizing all Griffin games (for athletes) at assemblies and hosting two tournaments throughout the school year.
Announcement Coordinator
Every day on the announcements, members of this committee present upcoming activities or events that are taking place throughout the week.
Mrs. La Vache, another ASB Advisor, plays her role by contacting any coaches, staff or teachers who want information included in the announcements and helps design a script for the following day.
VAPA Commissioner
This committee highlights the arts of LAHS, like Colorguard, Choir, Dance, Drama, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Orchestra, Symphonic Bands and the Visual Arts.
This committee coordinates with the arts and publishes for them, making them stand out.
“Our goal is that every student feels welcome and included; we try to model that within our class by being welcoming,” Schanaker said.
Publicity
All of the incredible, elaborate posters hung up around campus are from Publicity. They spend their time making professional or fun posters, ensuring that any event or game here on campus is getting acknowledged.
ASB Development
ASB Development focuses on bettering ASB by organizing bonding activities, potlucks and parties throughout the year to ensure that ASB grows together as a class.
Students in ASB had the opportunity to attend a 4-day camp this summer before school resumed.
“Students get to go to workshops about their specific job and get a lot of ideas from other schools,” Schanker said.
At the Orange County Leadership Camp, located in Santa Barbara, ASB bonded with each other as a class and gained a sense of what the year would be like.
“(Camp) really sets a foundation for our class, sets really close bonds and gets us a good stepping stone for the year,” Schanaker said.
