LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — America is in the midst of Girl Scout cookie season and many people are curious about all the changes made to the corporation in these past years. Prices have risen and different cookie flavors are being added or discontinued every year. As a result of these changes, some people are not purchasing Girl Scout cookies as much as they would have in previous years. People are either upset about the extreme price of $6 – $7 per box, or their favorite flavor has been discontinued. Even some Girl Scouts themselves have noticed how these changes have affected their customer engagement.
“Every year is different. Some people get excited about the new flavors, while others just stick to their favorites,” said sophomore Emily Gail who has been a Girl Scout for over ten years.
The evolution of Girl Scout cookies
In 1933, the first Girl Scout cookie boxes were made and sold, with each box including 44 cookies for 23 cents. Over the last 92 years, many changes have occurred. However, not all the modifications have negatively impacted the Girl Scout cookie business itself. Girl Scouts of the USA has used different marketing techniques and unique attire to establish a new name for itself.
One major change that has created a massive spike in Girl Scout cookie profits has been the introduction to online sales. Girl Scouts across the nation are able to make digital storefronts which allows them to reach a wider audience outside of their local community. Online sales have also taken place through different social platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
The skills behind the sales
Many people see Girl Scouts as just young girls selling a sweet treat, but it is much more than that. These scouts are developing communication and leadership skills that are going to help them in future work environments. They learn how to handle money, advertise products as well as overcome rejection from potential buyers.
“Selling cookies has helped me become more confident; I used to be nervous to talk to people but now I feel that I can approach anyone,” said Girl Scout seventh grader Alexis Chen.
The Girl Scout environment helps the girls to feel comfortable trying new things and putting themselves out of their comfort zones. From dealing with businesses to communicating with customers, Girl Scouts are more than prepared to be confident in their daily lives.
“I’ve noticed that I’m not as scared to talk in front of my classmates anymore because I’ve had to speak with so many different people outside of school,” said Girl Scout eighth grader Mila Kelly.
As Girl Scouts of the USA continues to evolve, it will always remain a vital component in empowering young girls nationwide. With hard work, leadership skills and community service, Girl Scouts across the nation are preparing for a bright future of impacting the world around them and helping others.
