LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — “IAMMUSIC” is an album millions of fans were waiting on. Playboi Carti has been working on this album since 2020, and it was finally released on March 14 after years of him saying “coming soon.” In 2024, Carti played songs from “IAMMUSIC” at Rolling Loud Miami, and he featured artists like Metro Boomin, Future and The Weeknd.
Recently, billboards around Los Angeles have been promoting “IAMMUSIC.” There were multiple billboards spotted with messages like “SORRY 4 DA WAIT,” “MUSIC IS COMING,” “BABY BOI,” “DELAYED” and “IMSOYVL.” The billboards have also had the Spotify logo since Spotify is sponsoring the ablum. Spotify tweeted on its X account a week prior to the album’s release about Carti and how the album would be released very soon
Los Alamitos High School senior Jack D. explained when he thought Carti would release IAMMUSIC.
“Never. He ain’t dropping,” he said.
Many people had given up on the album’s release. Last year, the week leading up to Sept. 13, 2024, Carti started hyping everyone up like he was going to finally drop the album; he posted on his Instagram story saying “this Friday.”
Even sports teams like the Phoenix Suns posted on Instagram telling Carti to drop the album. However, that Friday, Sept. 13, he dropped a single called “ALL Red.” He also added to his merch store the “IAMMUSIC” disk player, which said it would come no later than six months, from Sept. 12 to March 12; some fans thought Carti would drop the album before March 12, but others thought he would refund everyone who ordered the disk player.
Carti headlined Rolling Loud on March 16 in Inglewood. This announcement made people believe he wouldn’t drop the album, since he was already headlining concerts. He’s also touring with The Weeknd from May 9 to Dec. 31, and The Weeknd’s prominence makes his name next to them seem less significant.
Because of this, fans believed he wouldn’t release “IAMMUSIC” until that tour finished, so he could dedicate an entire tour to his album.
College student Mathew Meyers, who attended the Rolling Loud Inglewood concert on March 16, predicted when he thought the album would drop.
“I think Carti will drop on March 7, a week before the concert, so he can play the songs there and promote the album more,” Meyers said.
A Discord leaker said on X that Carti was going to drop on March 7. They added that Carti would be dropping three albums; “IAMMUSIC” is the main solo project. There will also be a project like “BABYBOI” (a mixtape), and the third album is a collaboration with all the Opium members: Destroy Lonely, Ken Carson and Homixide Gang.
Carti posted to his Instagram story that he was waiting for the perfect time to release it since he wanted it to be number one on the charts.
Carti ended up releasing his album on March 14 at 3 a.m., and it immediately started trending all over X. The album is currently number one on Spotify and on Apple Music, and “EvilJordan,” “Rather Lie” and “Crush” are currently the most popular songs.
