LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — On Thursday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m., Music Studios showed off their talent in an end-of-semester performance at Bogart’s Coffee House. From listening to students singing originals to playing various instruments, the show didn’t have a dull moment. The student’s hard work and dedication made for a great night!
While the Music Studios teacher, Ms. Dherlin, helps guide and support students in Music Studios, it is mostly a student-run class. I could clearly see this on stage, and, like many audience members, I could tell that the students have been collaborating together and producing some really great music throughout this fall semester.
“The goal of this performance is that it’s student-driven,” Ms. Dherlin said. “I feel proud to see them step up and not only learn about making music but also about producing music.”
Songs like “Wishing on a Star,” “Keep a Look Out, Santa Claus,” “Snowy Mountain Blues” and “My Love is Gone” are all originals written by the students. Most originals even had a backstory behind them; Alyssa Witman’s song “Finally Home” is based on a girl trying to get her way back home for Christmas.
“I feel like it’s great for experience, and I’m excited,” Maya Somers, a Music Studios student, said. “I’ve never really put out any of my original music, which is why it’s so exciting.”
A lot of the songs performed were Christmas-themed and generated all the holiday spirit one could hope for. I walked in not feeling much about the holidays and ended up leaving with a cheery smile and ready for the holiday season!
While many students chose to sing their beautiful songs, others chose to play instruments. The song “Balling for Life” featured drums, guitar and saxophone. These instruments blended to create an upbeat song that I never wanted to end.
The talent students have to connect and create their music is incredible! It was amazing seeing students display such impressive abilities to entertain and show off their work. I recommend all Griffins to see a Music Studio performance in the future — it won’t disappoint!
