LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — The Los Alamitos High School drama department has announced auditions for “The Outsiders” play. The production is based on the renowned book “The Outsiders,” by S.E. Hinton, which provides excellent commentary on the society of the time. The book is told through the eyes of the young greaser, Ponyboy, and describes the experiences of his rivalry with the rich Socs, as well as his escape from the police after the accidental murder of a Soc.
“’The Outsiders’ is a searing story of real kids in real situations with real consequences seen through the eyes of young Ponyboy,” said LAHS drama teacher Mrs. Castiglione. “This heroic story of belonging, friendship and maintaining hope in the face of struggle is a powerful reminder of what young people encounter every day.”
The play includes territorial battles between the Socs, the wealthy kids, and the greasers, Ponyboy’s tough and underprivileged family and friends. Despite the gang violence, Ponyboy holds onto a short poem that speaks to their “fragile young lives,” Mrs. C. said.
Auditions for the show will take place on Thursday, Nov. 14 in the Black Box Theater, room 513. All students are encouraged to audition, whether in LAHS drama or not.
The theater department is also looking for people to work on lighting, sound, hair, makeup, costumes, building and painting the set.
“You get to feel like you’re a part of something and watch the show come together. It’s amazing to watch,” LAHS sophomore Emily Gritchen said.
