LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — Working towards instilling confidence in young women in science, technology, engineering and math, Los Alamitos High School’s Women in STEM club aims to inspire innovation and create a safe and developing community for students. By providing learning opportunities for our community’s youth, Women in STEM equips women with the tools and confidence needed to succeed in a typically male-dominated industry.
Every week, club members lead workshops for children at The Youth Center. Dawn Mac, the club’s vice president, often attends and leads these workshops.
“Our club leads workshops every Wednesday for the young girls and kids at The Youth Center. We lead lessons and experiments on certain parts of STEM. For example, we made paper rockets and explained the science behind it along with the engineering of transportation to the kids,” Mac said.
One main goal that Women in STEM strives to achieve is encouraging female students to pursue careers in STEM fields. Removing the wedge between genders and encouraging young girls not to be afraid to pursue their big dreams are key elements in the foundation of the club.
As president of Women in STEM, Alexandra Delmendo has big dreams for the club.
The club is beneficial for members too as they are provided with many opportunities for volunteering, leadership skills, collaboration and exposure to other clubs.
“Within our campus, we organize club collaborations with other STEM and feminist clubs to foster a school-wide network of ambitious women,” Delmendo said.
At meetings, members and explorers can learn and share the experiences of the STEM community. The overwhelming support that the club receives from their members and the community allows them to continue to thrive and build their community.
Joining Women in STEM will provide you with all the tools and opportunities listed above. Find information on future club meetings on their Instagram @lahs_women.in.stem.
