LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — Rylee Robles is a senior at Los Alamitos High School and has accomplished a lot in her four years. She is the president of the Engineering Society, a flag football player and an advocate for artificial intelligence educational use in school. She has been able to balance her involvement in sports, school work and being a student ambassador for the Orange County Department of Education Pathway initiative with AI. She recently represented LAHS at Wordfest OC, where she led a session on creative writing and AI.
Robles spoke in an ambassador group at the OC Pathways. This group focused on AI and the possibilities of its use in education. During her break session, Robles and two other students built a character with AI that could interact with students in new ways.
“Students can see themselves in the media where otherwise they wouldn’t be able to, and AI is capable of building that for them,” Robles said.
One challenge in promoting AI is cheating; this is a high concern for the technology, but Robles emphasizes the importance of responsible use of AI. She also said that AI should be a tool and not a way to cut corners to finish an assignment.
“I think it’s more of a way to elevate your work than completely doing your work for you,” Robles said.
She also spoke about her experience at Wordfest OC, a conference at Saddleback Community College with different panels about AI and writing, that people could attend. Robles personally attended one on banned books and the importance of teaching them. At the panel, there was a professional writer, a writing teacher at UC Irvine in writing and a moderator; Robles was the only student there.
“I think once I got there and once we started talking, they were very welcoming,” Robles said.
Robles also spoke about her gratitude for the opportunities at LAHS. She described the experience as character-building for students to use the skills they learn here at school in the future.
“She is always on task, very creative. Always explores different ways to come up with solutions. and very committed to problem-solving,” said LAHS engineering teacher Mr. Valenzuela.
Congratulations to Robles for accomplishing so much at LAHS, being an example to current and future Griffins, and being an advocate for new ways of learning with AI.
