LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – This year, Griffins with a Mission falls on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Their goal is to create an inclusive and compassionate environment at Los Alamitos High School and for freshmen to bond with other freshmen through conversations and activities held in breakout groups.
Lexy Jones, a senior at LAHS and GWAM board member, is looking forward to helping freshmen truly feel accepted on campus during their time in high school. She has experienced GWAM’s impact firsthand and seen how it raises awareness for peers and surroundings.
“My favorite part about GWAM is when students realize that everyone in their breakout section has at least one thing in common. It is truly impactful for students to know they are not alone when they are handling their life experiences, whether it be struggles or successes,” Jones said.
Almost thirty years ago, a hate crime occurred on campus, so LAHS students banded together and formed GWAM, a place for Griffins to feel accepted and understood. The student body’s dedication to upholding GWAM’s values have created a strong program for Griffins to find their people and make lifelong friendships.
GWAM began as a club but has evolved into a grade-level event. This program grew to over half of the freshman class. These numbers have been climbing since the recovery period after the pandemic, strengthening the club’s impact on campus.
“The variety of topics those conversations (at GWAM) cover are so impactful. There’s really no other place for it to happen. For that reason, I think GWAM is so valuable. The connections and conversations build a bond between freshmen,” said Ms. Kibtya, one of the teachers who helps organize GWAM every year.
Students who participate in GWAM also get a different experience than other school trips.
“It gives students some time to step back, look at themselves and observe the community around them. This allows students to make genuine comments and decisions throughout the day, instead of participating in thing after thing,” Jones said.
Currently, Ms. Kibtya and Profe Aviña are working with upperclassmen to prepare leaders for GWAM, the exciting event that began as and remains a beacon of positivity to LAHS!
