LOS ALAMITOS, CA — The iconic and popular musicians behind the band Your Mom’s Best Friend announced their indie rock single in March 2024. Only last year, the boys played a house show with the Huntington Beach local band Stuck In July, made a debut at Autumnfest, and held a frightful fest on Halloween.

Eclectic and striking, their music has the ability to bring nostalgia to listeners while poking fun at the mundane.

Ella Suos: How many people do you think are listening to your song?

Chris Blocher: We currently have 5,500 streams at the moment.

ES: What was the process like creating “Make It Out”?

CB: We made the song about a year ago about a summer that seemed like everything wasn’t really going our way. We recorded a demo version of the song about a year ago and decided that it was a good enough song to re-record… as our first release.

ES: How was it playing with Stuck In July?

CB: Playing with Stuck In July is always a blast. We met them through one of our friends and decided to play a house show with them… ever since we’ve bonded and played shows together.

ES: How did the band name happen?

CB: We got the name “Your Mom’s Best Friend” when we were just forming the band and couldn’t think of a name, so we asked [our] former band member’s dad to recommend band names. He said “Your Mom’s Best Friend” as a joke and it just stuck with us.

ES: So, tell me what each member plays and how you met the guys.

Talan Carthey: I play rhythm guitar and sing, Chris handles the bass and vocals, Zach is on drums and background vocals, and Cash takes the lead on guitar. I’ve been with the band for about seven months. Zach, Chris, and Cash have been jamming together for over a year. I met the guys when I was playing a show at their house with another band called Stuck In July.

ES: How did you end up joining YMBF?

TC: We hit it off pretty easily and they asked me to play guitar for them at a fair gig. After that, they invited me to join YMBF. Ever since then, we’ve been super close.

ES: Where do you guys usually practice?

TC: When we’re writing songs, we usually gather in Zach and Chris’s studio room at their house and jam until we find something that clicks.

ES: I’m interested in your guys’ inspiration. Can you tell me a little bit more about that?

TC: Most of the covers we do fall into the indie rock and surf rock genres. We draw a lot of inspiration from The Backseat Lovers, Surf Curse, Current Joys, Sun Room, and Wallows.

ES: How do you feel about releasing “Make It Out” and is there anything we should look forward to?

TC: Even though I wasn’t there for the songwriting process, I love playing it with the guys. Currently, we’re working on several originals and if all goes well, we aim to release an EP by summer.
