LOS ALAMITOS, CA– Every year at Los Alamitos High School, the Interact Club hosts a talent show where talented Griffins get to show off their unique skills to an audience. Los Al hosts this event to sponsor The Week of Hope and fundraising and ticket sales for the talent show are donated to nonprofit organizations. This year was supposed to be Los Al’s 30th annual Interact Talent Show, but after careful consideration, Interact Leadership had decided to cancel the event.
What was the Talent Show supposed to be?
Los Al hosts yearly talent shows with the ticket sales going toward helping nonprofit organizations. Students from Los Al were able to sign up for the show through a Google Form. The show was scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 11, at 7 pm. Performers such as singers, dancers, bands, and any people with unique talents would have taken the stage, and the winner would have received two free prom tickets. There are no judges, so audience members can vote for their favorite act.
The Talent Show was brought back last year, but has not been able to have a strong rebound.
“For the last few years [the show] was not in the calendar so clubs had to fight to get in there, but Taylor, the PAC technician, was proactive in making sure to have a date on the calendar for next year [and] I am very thankful for her,” said Mrs. Grimshaw, advisor of Interact Club.
Who was selected as the nonprofit organization this year?
This year selected as the nonprofit organization was supposed to be Rainwater Harvesting, an organization focused on an innovative method for supplying households and businesses with water. They collect the run-off from structures/surfaces to preserve for a later use. The project aims to improve access to clean drinking water for low-income families.
What is happening now?
The Talent Show sadly had to be canceled due to several acts dropping out of the show. Los Al Interact Club may plan another event this year for students to showcase their talents and win prom tickets.
“As of now we don’t have any real plan as of yet on how to go forward. It is possible that we may try to come up with something, although it is relatively unlikely,” said Aidan Grimshaw, Co-President of the Interact Club. With this information, we can hope the Interact club will be able to put on another show for talented Griffins.
“In the past, The Week of Hope has included informational posters regarding the charity, lunchtime activities, a silent auction for LAHS staff, and culminated in a Talent Show open to all LAHS students. Since COVID-19, many things have changed. In fact, most clubs and their activities on our campus have changed. Engagement is not as strong, but is an ideal we continue to strive for,” Mrs. Grimshaw said. The Week of Hope was an effort by the Interact Club at LAHS to fundraise and inform students about the global charity.
Now with a date set for the new Interact Talent Show on March 27, 2025, hopefully, the students who signed up for the talent show this year will rejoin for next year’s show to be able to perform.
