LOS ALAMITOS, CA — From March 10-15, student candidates promoted their campaign for the 2024 ASB Elections. ASB is an important part of Los Al culture that cultivates participation and school spirit, so deciding who is going to be in charge is an important factor to determine.
Through the ASB elections, students get to vote for who is going to be the ASB president, ASB vice president, and class co-presidents for the next school year. This year’s candidates promoted their campaign in many creative ways such as posters, Instagram posts, or physical incentives that had specific themes towards their candidacy.
Era Berani and Michael Min, candidates for sophomore class co-presidents, had an Extra gum theme for their campaign in which their slogan read: “Make next year Extra great and vote Era & Michael.” They proceeded to pass out full packs of Extra gum to students at Los Al with hopes of encouraging votes.
Physical incentives such as gum, t-shirts, and candy are attention-grabbers to high schoolers, but is it fair to hand out items to entice students to vote for them?
“Handing out physical incentives is completely fair because other candidates could have done the same thing. I just thought it was smart to give something that students could wear and enjoy [like] sunglasses and ring pops,” said Brooke Bantle, next year’s sophomore co-president.
In theory, physical incentives may seem like buying someone’s vote, but it gets students to care about voting and is a fun way to gain support in the voting process.
“To me, physical incentives play a big part in the voting. I think it gets students involved and encourages them to participate. Although it may not get everyone involved, I think it is an important thing to do for the variety of students who do care about voting,” said Tatum Diniakos, a freshman student who voted.
After a week of wild campaigns, Los Al students took note of all they had learned and voted last Friday. The candidates who promoted their campaigns with physical incentives and appealing advertisements were the ones who had effective results.
“I think people decided who to vote for based on…visibility [posters, flyers, and social media posts], interaction [walking up to students and talking with them about the election], what activities you are a part of, and [the] influence of your peers’ opinions,” said Ella Pardasani, next years’ junior co-president.
Students voted on Friday, March 15 and the results were posted on the ASB Instagram. The post for the election results is below:
Congratulations to all the 2024 ASB election winners! Los Al cannot wait to see what you have planned for next year!
