LOS ALAMITOS, CA – Celebrities hit the red carpet on Jan. 7 right before the 81st Golden Globes awards. Every year the red carpet overflows with amazing fashion, but there are always a few funky fits. 2024 is full of new trends and styles, but do these red carpet outfits radiate fashion, or do they belong in the trash bin?

As a disclaimer, fashion is a form of art and is different for everyone. A person should wear what they want because they want to, and nobody should be there to judge. But in this article, I will be harshly reviewing six outfits, meaning no offense to the designer or the person wearing the outfit.

LENNY KRAVITZ

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Not only is Lenny Kravitz an actor and music artist – he’s also a fashion icon. Kravitz hit the red carpet this year in a simple, yet intricate black pantsuit from Alexander McQueen. It was a monotone look with cutouts on the sides and back to add some shape. He leveled up his look with matching sunglasses and pointed boots. Kravitz is always a style icon, and his look did not disappoint. “The Hunger Games” really knew who they were casting to play Katniss’ fashion designer.

HELEN MIRREN

Now this is an outfit you couldn’t have missed. Helen Mirren attended the red carpet wearing a bright purple dress and matching cape. Although Mirren was fantastic in “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” I don’t remember her playing the fairy godmother. Her outfit is giving pillowcase or graduate-fairy godmother.

TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET

This simple, yet sophisticated sparkly suit coat and accessories made him go from “Lil Timmy Tim” to ‘Timothée Chalamet.” The suit was sleek, well-fitted, and timeless. I loved that a necklace was added to tie up the whole outfit, so his chest wasn’t completely blank. His hair is also on point, giving a messy-yet-tamed look.

“The look is cutting edge and chic,” said Ms. Ford-Patterson, a Los Alamitos High School staff member.

ANDRA DAY

There’s so much that I can say about Andra Day’s Golden Globes look, starting with the words: best dressed. This was my all-time favorite look of the year. Day did not come to play. Her look was simple, yet elevated, with accessories and patterns. The star of the show is a black mesh dress, featuring sequinned black polka dots and floral ruffles. She took her outfit to another level by accessorizing with black mesh gloves to match the dress, and blingy silver jewelry. Day’s hair and makeup is flawless, and there is a tiny pop of hot pink on her nails. To say the very least, Day came to serve, and that is exactly what she did. Her designer will definitely be planning my wedding.

HUNTER SCHAFER

I love Hunter Schafer, but when I saw her red carpet look, it did not give me a euphoric feeling. The dress quite literally looked like a cat attacked a silk pillowcase. Or she was mummified. Either way, it was not my favorite, and definitely not in my top 10. Aside from the saran wrap look of the dress, I did like the color. I also enjoyed her simple makeup look and slicked-back hairdo.

KAREN GILLAN

Gillan’s outfit in four words: What is going on? The demogorgon from “Stranger Things”? Uncopyrighted “Reputation” era? I’m so confused. Don’t get me wrong, I loved when Gillan played Nebula in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” but this outfit was definitely from another galaxy. Her dress is receiving some mixed comments, both negative and positive. Although I’m not a fan of the fit, I do appreciate that she kept the hair and makeup neutral to give the dress all of the attention.

At the end of the day, everyone showed up and showed out. The celebrities brought their all, even if it meant a not-so-appealing outfit. Although the outfits were fun to judge, the awards were held to honor people for their work, not for their looks. The 2024 Golden Globes was a success, with many new fashion takes, and we’ll have to see what kind of fashion the next red carpet will bring us.
