LOS ALAMITOS, CA — As Los Al students are nearing the end of the semester, for many, finals are looming on the horizon. The exams will cover all the topics students have learned this past semester, testing each student’s knowledge and memory of multiple subjects. Finals are coming up quickly but, there is still plenty of time to study and prepare beforehand. Study tools and different reviewing styles are a great way to prepare for the test beforehand.
“Prioritize which classes will need your best attention – especially any borderline grades Eat and sleep well in the week before exams, especially the days of finals. Celebrate when you are done!” said Mrs. Parsons, a Los Al teacher.
The time leading up to the final is a good time to prep the best way you can. Asking for advice from teachers and other students can be a great way to know what to study.
“Your phone is going to be your biggest distraction,” said Michaela Ibrahin, a senior. “So, put it on Do Not Disturb and put it somewhere where it is not tempting to touch or go on.”
Many students have different techniques for studying and reviewing past work. There are numerous ways to prepare for an exam that all work better or worse for others. Part of preparing for finals is finding a good way to study best for the student and the subject.
“It depends on the class,” said Jenny Woo, a sophomore. “If I am studying for math, then I’d redo old homework that I had struggled with or so the final review packet a couple (of) times. However, if I’m studying for a different class, like Spanish or English, I like to use Quizlet, Quizziz, or Kahoot as study materials since it is digital and easily accessible.”
“First, I look at Aeries to see what subjects I am doing bad at, and I figure out where to start,” said Trent Massey, a sophomore. “From there, I go through notes, tests, and anything else I think is helpful, spending the most time on things I struggle with.”
Additionally, utilizing resources to help with mental health can also allow students to take a breather. On Dec. 13, Los Al’s Emerging Leaders Club held an event to help students manage their anxiety during finals season. Students could decompress and find resources for mental health. If students need any further help with mental health, OC Navigator is another available tool. Although the event has passed, these resources are still available for those who need them.
Though finals season can be anxiety-inducing, taking the time to study can help relieve some of the pressure. By taking the process step-by-step, stress can turn into success.
