LOS ALAMITOS, CA — Some students know her as the yearbook teacher, and others may know her as a geometry teacher at Los Alamitos High School. However, Mrs. March, outside of teaching geometry and yearbook, loves to spend time with her family, especially at the beach. She shared with the Griffin Gazette her personal growth and the ironic story that led to her teach geometry.
Mrs. March, like many teachers at Los Al, was a student here first. She grew up in the Los Alamitos area – her mother was also a counselor during the four years that Mrs. March attended Los Al. During her time as a Griffin, Mrs. March was in ASB, Link Crew, Spanish Honors Society Club, the varsity volleyball team at Los Al, and was crowned Winter Formal Princess her senior year.
Q&A with Mrs. March
This interview was edited and condensed.
Question: What activities do you enjoy on your weekends?
Answer: On the weekends I like to spend time with my family, like [going] to the beach and watching my husband surf and the kids [playing] in the sand. We like spending time with extended family, like going boating and going out to dinner. My favorite restaurant is Freddie’s. I love Italian food.
Q: What do you like to do with your family?
A: We like to go out on the boat, go to Catalina, [go] to the beach; we like to run errands as a family. We spend a lot of time together. We like to go to the park – my kids are three and five, so we do things that revolve around what they enjoy. We like to go to Knott’s Berry Farm, and we have Knott’s passes. A lot of our family has Knott’s passes. I bought the drink and food pass, which a lot of students make fun of, but we love it.
Q: What kind of things do you do with your friends?
A: With my friends, I like to go out to dinner, go to concerts, do yoga, go shopping. We go to Fashion Island and Irvine Spectrum to walk around. I go out of town for a weekend away with college friends who I don’t see often, and we do a girls’ trip.
Q: Are you more of a book or movie person?
A: I am a movie person, 100%, even though I fall asleep in most movies.
Q: How do you think your close friends would describe you?
A: I would say they would describe me as supportive, fun, outgoing, adventurous, and loving.
Q: What is one way you have grown personally?
A: I learned to prioritize better, so I have given myself grace. I understand now that I cannot do everything perfectly and just prioritize things in the moment. I used to be a go-getter, and I realized I cannot do that all the time. I have grown to accept I cannot do everything at once, and that is okay.
Q: What is your favorite memory here at Los Al?
A: My favorite memory is playing volleyball and being in ASB. We won CIF and State when I played volleyball here. I have a lot of fun memories playing volleyball, and in ASB they let me do announcements and the assemblies, and I remember having to learn a lot of dances for it. Also, ASB camp was very fun. It is fun now to work with some people that taught me.
Q: Do you plan on having your kids come to Los Al?
A: Maybe in the future if distance is not a factor, but if we lived closer then yes!
Q: Why teach high school?
A: At first I thought I wanted to be a dermatologist, but when I shadowed a local dermatologist in high school, I fainted, and that dream was crushed. Then I wanted to be a social worker, but that was very sad, so I decided to be a teacher. I always loved math. In college I ran a math tutoring class, and I liked it. My mom always convinced me to teach math, and I feel this age group is fun to teach.
Q: What is something that you know will always make you smile?
A: My family, my friends, my students, and also looking back on videos of my kids when they were younger, including our dog. My husband and I always randomly send each other videos from when our kids were younger, and even when our dog was little.
Los Al is lucky to have a teacher like Mrs. March. Her personality and charisma are what help her be the fantastic teacher she is. Any student is fortunate to be a part of her class, and any person is lucky to know her.
