LOS ALAMITOS, CA– Last Monday evening on May 1, celebs took to the carpet for this year’s annual Met Gala. The event itself has been occurring since 1948 and is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. The entertainment industry’s most prominent stars arrived in embellished gowns and suits fitting for this year’s theme as a tribute to the late German designer, Karl Lagerfeld.

Here at the Griffin Gazette, we’ve amassed our top ten favorite looks from the evening.

Coming in at the top of our list is one of Hollywood’s most well-known actresses, Anne Hathaway. The Oscar-winning actress arrived at the Met in a breathtaking white Versace full-length gown. The unique cut-outs in the bodice were held together by gold safety pins adorned with pearls. Hathway paid homage to Lagerfeld by channeling a 90s supermodel look that was complete with a voluminous half-up half-down hairdo. The fabric choice made by Donatella Versace made for a beautiful gown that was paired perfectly with a signature Versace platform pump.

Next up on the list of best dressed at this year’s Met Gala, we have Anok Yai. The supermodel paid tribute to the German designer in a monochrome sequined gown with a tulle train. The South Sudanese model was adorned in a gorgeous dress that stood out. Keeping the look simple, Yai opted out of wearing bold jewelry which allowed onlookers to focus on the dress. The Prabal Gurung mini dress gave off a jellyfish vibe that was attention-grabbing. The shiny gold of the bodice added to the marine life aura, and was brilliantly contrasted with a black tulle underskirt and train which allowed the strapless dress to pop even more on the carpet.

Third, we have the Floridian-born actor, Jeremy Pope dressed in a bold shirt-cape combo. The unique shirt had an image of the late designer that made for a show-stopping moment. The look was an ode to Lagerfeld’s adored color palette of black and white. Pope stuck to the contrasting colors for the whole outfit by pairing his top with black trousers that complemented his top perfectly, allowing the train of his shirt to be the main focus.

Following Pope with another one of the many black and white outfits of the evening is Ben Platt. The American actor and singer were dressed in a white suit that had black decorating the collar of his suit blazer. There was another pop of black with a stripe going along the outer seam of his trousers. The lining of black against the otherwise monochrome look was a much-needed touch that made the outfit more appealing. Platt’s look was refreshing to see after so many simple black suits that are usually seen at these high fashion events.

Fifth on our list is none other than Penelope Cruz. The Spanish actress arrived beautifully dressed in a Chanel gown. Being a co-chair for the event itself, it is unsurprising that she showed up and showed out. The dress was a gorgeous ode to one of Lagerfeld’s most-known looks of a Chanel bride. The light blue gown was littered with silver jewels that shined on the carpet and paired well with her simple silver accessories. The look also incorporated a sheer hood, lined with jewels that really elevated the dress overall.

Next up is Cai Xukun in Prada. The Chinese singer-songwriter kept his look relatively simple, arriving in an oversized black blazer. What put his look in the top ten for the evening was the jewels added to the suit jacket elevated the otherwise basic look. The suit was paired with a decorated tie and a stack of silver necklaces that completed the outfit.

Likewise, Eddie Redmayne gave us a similar look in an Alexander McQueen suit. The English actor opted for the classic, simple suit, but with a twist. Redmayne’s blazer was embellished with multiple brooches and chains that made his look stand out against other celebs in attendance in a black suit. The added jewels brought the look to a different level alongside Cai Xukun which was nice to see at the Met.

Eighth on our list is Chi Osse in Advisory. The New York City Council member added a bit of flare to a suit that was a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s 1983 Chanel collection. The politician was clad in a well-fitted suit. However, Osse and the designer, Keith Herron, added a spin to a classic look. The suit blazer featured a shoulderless twist that made the look unique. The distinctive outfit was adorned with a black belt with an added gold chain to match the suit buttons.

After the American activist, we have none other than Billie Eilish in Simone Rocha. The twenty-one-year-old singer-songwriter provided a gorgeous, sultry black look. Eilish wore a gown with a sheer illusion neckline. The sheer fabric was consistent throughout Eilish’s look from her gloves to her tights. Her dress this year embodied one of Lagerfeld’s original sketches and favorite colors, paying homage to Karl himself.

Last on our top ten from Monday evening we have another singer-songwriter, Halle Bailey in Gucci. The live-action Little Mermaid star was dolled up in a sequin-studded white gown. The added ruffled cape contributed to the gorgeous dress and complemented the floor-length gown well. Bailey’s shiny lace halter neck gown made for a breathtaking moment for the actress in the midst of the red carpet.

Of course, we wouldn’t be able to finish out our list without an honorable mention to the designer that bodied this year’s theme through and through.

It is without a doubt that this year’s theme brought out some show-stopping looks, but one designer that stood out from the crowd was Thom Browne. The American designer is widely regarded for redefining modern tailoring and that was seen with many of his suits that were sported on the carpet last Monday. Browne’s looks were showcased by an array of celebs from English actress, Bella Ramsey, to Australian Formula One driver, Daniel Riccardo. All of his designs throughout the evening were cohesive black-and-white looks that didn’t disappoint.
