Scuba diving Griffins! (Part 1)

What is going on with the scuba diving unit in the P.E. classes?

LOS ALAMITOS, CA– What comes to mind when someone thinks of a Physical Education class may be: running the mile, playing different sports throughout the year, and wearing the same P.E. uniform for an entire week. However, this month, Los Al Griffins are not doing exercises in the hot sun; they are learning to scuba dive.

The course will be taught by Mr. Mike Fenton (affectionately named “Scuba Mike” by his students) from the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) with a motto of “Dive Safety Through Education”, the non-profit organization provides diving instruction and certification through its large network of professional divers.

Students from Fenton’s first-period class at LAHS gave their opinions on the scuba diving course when the unit first began.

“I don’t think we would ever get another chance to do this. It would cost thousands of dollars”,  said freshman Jenny Woo.

“Even though [the class] will be kind of new to [people], it will also be very [memorable],” Sarah Urquiza, a freshman, said. “It will be a lot of fun with your friends. Also, you don’t have to run the mile.”

“I’m most excited to get into the water, and I’m least excited about having the [scuba] tank and the [scuba] mask on. That would be kind of nerve-racking, in a way,” Danielle McCabe said.

So far, the scuba-diving course taught in the P.E. classes has been quite an adventure. This will be new territory for the recently-renovated LAHS pool, as well as a unique and unforgettable experience for participating students. Stay tuned for Part Two of this article, where Fenton gives his thoughts on scuba diving, as well as special underwater footage of students scuba diving in the LAHS pool!
